How to get rid of tires in New York
New York regulates waste tires under the Waste Tire Management and Recycling Act (ECL Article 27, Title 19). Tire retailers must accept used tires back when you buy new ones, and a state waste-tire fee applies on new tire sales. Town transfer stations often accept a limited number of passenger tires for a local fee.

Statewide rules
- NYSDEC estimates about 18 to 20 million waste tires are generated in New York each year.
- Tire service centers must accept used tires from customers in approximately the same size and in a quantity equal to the number of new tires purchased or installed. This acceptance duty currently runs through December 31, 2027 under the Act as extended.
- A waste tire management and recycling fee of $2.50 per new tire sold (including tires on new motor vehicles) is collected at sale and remitted to the state. Centers may retain a 25-cent allowance per tire. The fee is currently effective until December 31, 2027.
- Service centers may also charge customers up to $2.50 per tire as a separate fee to defray their own recycling cost, with required signage.
- The Act includes a prohibition on land burial of waste tires except where DEC determines beneficial use is not feasible.
- Do not dump tires. Stockpiles create mosquito and fire hazards; DEC abates non-compliant piles under the Act.
