Rhode Island guide
How to get rid of furniture or a couch in Rhode Island
Couches, chairs, and other bulky furniture are usually priced on each town's transfer-station fee sheet, or charged as solid waste / bulky waste at Resource Recovery. There is no separate statewide furniture disposal ban like the covered e-waste or mattress recycling programs.
Facts checked against RIRRC and town sources on 2026-11-05.
Town fees vs mattresses
Many towns list couch / sofa / upholstered furniture as a flat fee. Mattresses and box springs are often a different line item (and often free when recyclable under the MRC program). Use the mattress guide for sleep surfaces.
Resource Recovery
Individual residents bringing solid waste or bulky loads to RIRRC pay commercial gate rates, not municipal contract rates. Review the current Fee Schedule and Materials Acceptance Criteria before you go. The Residential Recycling Area handles many special / bulky categories.
