How to get rid of an air conditioner or dehumidifier in Massachusetts
Large appliances (white goods) are banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers with refrigerant are usually handled as Freon appliances at the town transfer station, often with a per-unit fee.
Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.
Statewide white-goods ban
- MassDEP lists white goods (large appliances) among materials banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts.
- Towns and recyclers commonly charge for Freon-bearing units (air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers) separately from non-Freon scrap metal.
- Do not put a Freon appliance in ordinary household trash headed for landfill or combustion. Use the town transfer station or a recycler that accepts white goods.
