Appliances and bulky furniture in Massachusetts
Large appliances (white goods) are banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts. Town transfer stations and recyclers are the normal path. Bulky furniture is usually a local fee item, not a separate statewide ban.
Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.
White goods waste ban
- MassDEP lists white goods (large appliances) among materials currently banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts.
- Related bans that often show up on the same trip: cathode ray tubes, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, whole tires (landfills), leaves and yard waste, and mattresses (since November 1, 2022).
- Bring appliances to your town's transfer station or a recycler that accepts them. Many towns charge a per-unit fee, especially for Freon-bearing units.

Bulky furniture
Couches, mattresses aside, and similar furniture are not on the MassDEP waste-ban table as their own category the way white goods and mattresses are. Towns set bulky-item fees. Use the town page for the sofa or chair fee, and use the mattress guide when the item is a mattress or box spring.
