How to get rid of a mattress in Massachusetts

Since November 1, 2022, Massachusetts has banned disposing of mattresses (and transporting them for disposal) at solid waste facilities. Residents need a recycling or reuse path, usually through the town transfer station, a retailer haul-away, or a charity that accepts clean units.

Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.

The statewide disposal ban

  • Effective date: November 1, 2022 (MassDEP press release and MassDEP Mattress Recycling guide).
  • Mattresses are on the MassDEP waste disposal ban list along with textiles added the same day.
  • MassDEP's Mattress Recycling guide: donate usable mattresses, ask retailers about haul-away when you buy a new one, or contact your city or town recycling / public works office for the local collection program.
  • MassDEP estimates Massachusetts generates roughly 600,000 unwanted mattresses per year; more than 75 percent of components can be recycled when units are properly processed.

What to do if your town is not listed yet

Use MassDEP's city and town recycling links from the Mattress Recycling guide, or call your local DPW / Board of Health. Do not put a recyclable mattress in household trash headed for landfill or combustion. Contaminated units have a separate MassDEP certification path for municipalities and handlers; ask the town before you assume trash is allowed.
