How to get rid of a TV or electronics in Massachusetts

Cathode ray tubes (older TVs and computer monitors) are banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts. Most towns charge a per-item fee for TVs and electronics at the transfer station.

Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.

CRT waste ban

  • MassDEP lists cathode ray tubes among materials currently banned from disposal or transfer for disposal in Massachusetts.
  • MassDEP's waste-ban fact sheet groups CRTs with older televisions and computer monitors.
  • Do not put a CRT in ordinary trash. Use your town transfer station, a municipal electronics collection, or another lawful recycler.
  • Flat-panel TVs and computers are not the same legal category as CRTs on the ban table, but towns usually price them on the same electronics fee sheet. Check the town page.
