How to get rid of scrap metal in Massachusetts

Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are on the MassDEP waste disposal ban list. Towns usually provide a scrap metal or bulk metal area at the transfer station, sometimes free with a sticker.

Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.

Statewide metal ban

MassDEP lists ferrous and non-ferrous metals among materials banned from disposal or transfer for disposal. Separate white goods (large appliances) from loose scrap when the town requires it, especially Freon units.
