How to get rid of furniture or a couch in Massachusetts

Couches and most bulky furniture are local fee items at town transfer stations. They are not listed as their own category on the MassDEP waste-ban table the way white goods, mattresses, and CRTs are. Mattresses have a separate statewide disposal ban.

Facts checked against Mass.gov and town sources on 2026-11-05.

What is statewide vs local

  • Mattresses and box springs: banned from disposal since November 1, 2022. See the mattress guide.
  • White goods (large appliances): banned from disposal. See the appliances guide.
  • Couches, chairs, and similar furniture: check your town's bulky / upholstered furniture fee.
