How to get rid of tires in Massachusetts
Whole tires are banned from disposal at Massachusetts landfills. Shredded tires are acceptable at landfills under MassDEP rules. Most residents use a town transfer station tire fee or ask a tire retailer when buying replacements.

Statewide waste ban on whole tires
- MassDEP's waste disposal bans list: "Whole tires (banned from landfills only; shredded tires acceptable)."
- MassDEP facility guidance: whole tires may be disposed at a solid waste combustion facility; shredded tires (cut, sliced, or ground into four or more pieces so the circular form is eliminated) may be disposed at a landfill.
- Municipal fact sheet language: whole tires are motor vehicle tires of all types; combustion facilities can accept whole tires for disposal; shredded tires are not restricted the same way.
- Do not put whole tires in ordinary household trash headed for a landfill. Use your town's tire drop-off or another lawful outlet.

Retailers
MassDEP's "What are the Massachusetts Waste Bans?" fact sheet notes that materials such as vehicle batteries, tires, and cathode ray tubes may be collected by retailers. There is no statewide mandated consumer tire take-back fee published on the MassDEP waste-ban pages TownDumps checked. Ask the shop when you buy new tires whether they accept your old ones and what they charge.
